Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing

Talk 4 Writing is an approach used across the school, more frequently in Early Years and Key Stage One. This approach enables children to imitate key language needed for a particular genre before they begin to read, analyse, plan and write. Talk 4 Writing builds upon three key stages – imitation, innovation and independent application. Using this approach motivates and encourages children to put techniques explored through speaking, listening and reading into their own writing. Children have the skills needed to really think about the composition and when editing and redrafting they tackle this with greater confidence.

Cold to hot writing is an approach used across the school from Year 1 – Year 6. Children begin an English unit completing a cold write on blue paper. This is then marked against a checklist of genre features. The children then spend time learning the features of the genre in lessons and targeting key skills identified in the cold write. On completion of the unit the children then complete a hot write on pink paper. Again this is marked against the genre checklist and highlights the progress each child has made in writing. All cold to writing can be found in the children’s English books.
