Maths outside of the Classroom

The Golden Calculator – During North Fawdon’s weekly Golden Assembly, outstanding achievements in maths are celebrated and a class is awarded the Golden Calculator for their successes that week.

Outdoor Maths – We believe that maths ‘comes alive’ outside and that it is vital for children to understand that maths is ‘all around us’. Regular opportunities are planned for outdoor maths across the school but particularly in Early Years and Key Stage One.

Annual House Maths Trail – Each year, children at North Fawdon split up into their house teams and compete in a themed maths trail around the school. Activities are hands-on, fun and challenging.

Themed Weeks – Annual weeks based around themes such as ‘maths throughout history’ and ‘maths through story’ aim to enthuse and engage children and provide meaningful contexts in which to learn and apply maths learning.

National Young Mathematician’s Award – Each year a small group of mathematicians from upper Key Stage Two are selected and entered into the National Young Mathematician’s Award - a nationwide competition in conjunction with Explore Learning, the NRICH Project and Cambridge University.
