Mathematics at North Fawdon Primary School

At North Fawdon Primary School, we believe that it is vital to foster a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards Maths, and that Maths is a successful experience for all learners.  We are dedicated to providing all children with a wide range of purposeful, well-planned and cross-curricular mathematical activities and experiences that are both matched to need whilst providing challenge and enjoyment.

Key principles

  • Activities are well planned to ensure progress in the short, medium and long term.
  • Teaching and learning activities enthuse, engage and motivate children to learn and foster their curiosity in Mathematics.
  • Constant assessment informs teaching so that there is provision for support, consolidation and extension of learning for each child, at each level of attainment.

  • Progress and successes are shared with children on a daily basis, children are clear on next steps and targets and willing to tackle challenges with enthusiasm and resilience.
  • Children are given daily opportunities to check and make any corrections, tackle misconceptions and reflect on their progress.

Curriculum Provision

The National curriculum for mathematics (2014) aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Can reason mathematically
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics.

 At North Fawdon Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children secure key number facts at, or before age-related expectations, including their times tables and number bonds.  We believe that this will support them in becoming fluent and confident at mental calculations.  Through regular investigation work, children are also given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills, whilst becoming resilient and successful problem-solvers.

Maths meetings are held regularly in each year group; aimed at developing fluency by allowing frequent practice of basic mental and written calculation skills and key fact recall.

Misconceptions and gaps are also addressed in these sessions.  Within the daily Maths lesson, challenges are provided to stretch and challenge all abilities and ensure exposure to a ‘mastery curriculum’.  Children are also given regular opportunities in the classroom to be Maths Leaders, supporting, teaching and feeding back to their peers about their learning.

 Practical apparatus (including Numicon and Base 10) and visual models (Singapore Bar Model) are integral to classroom practice at North Fawdon, helping children to move from the concrete to pictorial to abstract, and grasp a solid understanding of key maths concepts.  At every opportunity, children are encourage to see and make the links between these key concepts and between their learning in Maths.

We also place great importance upon spoken language within Maths lessons and key vocabulary is modelled and shared explicitly, with the expectation that children use this when talking about their maths.
