English outside of the Classroom

English outside of the Classroom

Golden Awards – During North Fawdon’s weekly Golden Assembly, outstanding achievements in writing are celebrated and a class is awarded the Golden Pen for their successes that week. In addition to this the class with the highest Bug Club attendance that week are awarded the Golden Bug Club book.

Annual House Reading Trail – Each year, children at North Fawdon split up into their house teams and compete in a themed reading trail around the school. Activities are hands-on, fun and challenging and encourage children to draw upon their reading knowledge. The trail also provides opportunities for ‘reading leaders’ to support their group across the morning.

Themed Weeks – Annual weeks based around themes such as ‘Author Study Week’ aim to enthuse and engage children and provide meaningful contexts in which to learn and apply English learning across the curriculum.

Monthly Guest Editors – Each month a class takes a turn to showcase their learning from that month in the school newsletter. Through this opportunity, children have an audience and purpose to write for and thoroughly enjoy taking part in publishing their work to the whole school community.

Clubs – Children in Key Stage 2 have recently set up their own newspaper, written by children for children. It is a lovely opportunity for skilled writers to enthuse and engage other children across Key Stage 2 to write about their passions, skills and experiences. Watch out for the first edition, coming soon!
